Emotionally Healthy Discipleship

Takeaways from the Episode

1. Emotional Health Matters

Emotional Health and Spiritual maturity cannot be separated. Another way of saying that is this: you cannot be spiritually mature and emotionally unhealthy. If you are unloving, unsafe, easily triggered, unapproachable, condescending, judgmental and proud, it doesn’t matter how much Bible you know, you are immature. Emotional health means that you are very self-aware, safe, approachable and that you have a slowed down spirituality with Jesus. It is your ability to live into your feelings and to feel your feelings, without being bound or controlled by them. Emotional health is David committing adultery, and murder and then making sure he was held accountable in the record books of humanity.

2. If You Don’t Get Discipleship Right You Don’t Get Leadership Right

Often people equate good discipleship with spiritual practices. Don’t get us wrong, we love spiritual practices but Pete brings up a good point. If discipleship is just about another spiritual practice to master, it can quickly become just another heavy yoke to bear. Spiritual practices themselves aren’t enough. Good discipleship and good leadership flow from time spent slowed down with Jesus.

3. You Cannot Give Away What You Do Not Possess

Think about that last gift you gave away, you had to first go to the store and purchase it. You cannot give away what you don’t possess. Leaders give away who they are, so being found in Jesus becomes the most important part of emotionally healthy leadership. Who you are is more important than what you say.

4. Three Steps You Can Take Toward Emotionally Healthy Discipleship

Here are the 3 steps you need to take if you want to transform your church:

1. Buy The Emotionally Discipleship Kit. This Kit is not something you do. It is something you live. If you are looking for another plug and play program, this is not it.

2. Get Trained. Join Pete for Live Stream Training where he will teach you how to bring this to your church.

3. Run the Course at your church and grow your people into spiritual adulthood.
